Fates of arrested, besides Julian Wieciech ps., "Skrzat" , are well-known only from the account of "Skrzat" who survived and after the sy in several camps returned home, after the liberation by the American army in 15 day of April 1945 of the year. To the description of his fates and comrades, were of service to me mostly fragments of his report "Resurrection in Bergen-Belsen", in the Cracow's-Newspaper the Magazine Friday from the day 21 of April 1995 of the year and the tale "My good luck this is that I survived", in volume 5 of the publishers the Foundation "My war - childhood", Warszawa  2001.

"And so foolishly I got ... There was Sunday 29 of October 1944 of the year. I got up early and newsed with the strange feeling, with some trouble I turned out and I hid in the barn, in the deep recess at the very bottom of the rick of small sheaves cereals."... "Suddenly gave a bark our dog named "Azor". It is not on neighbours, but on somebody of completely. Well hidden, I tried something to see by the crack between beams, but in the pea-souper was visible nothing. After a little I heard ... some conversations which went on nor in Polish, nor the also German language. It seemed to me that I hear as quiet as a mouse expressed Russian words. This the surely Russian landing troops - I thought. Not reflecting quickly I went out from the barn. It is necessary to give to know commanders. Hardly I opened door, at once I heard  the loud shout: Stoj, halt!" " ... I stood rooted to the ground. Now only I noticed that close by Ukrainians from the division SS Galizien stand members Gestapo. When I saw the corpse of the skull, I took fright. So I got, so naively, so foolishly, almost on the own wish."... So this set up the ordeal of Officer Cadet Julian Wieciech ps. "Skrzat", the youngest participant of the drama in what partook 12 of members of our agency.

"Approached to me two people with Gestapo and after exact revising with hands on the neck, one introduced me home. There one executed the already detailed revision"... "... the brother Tadek stood in the hall under a strong escort with hands to the top." "...of the torturer they asked, where is the weapons, where are mines from drops and where are hidden thrust down allied - airmen"... "Jostled and beaten, taciturnly we disposed questions and of the threat."... "... effected revision did not bring effects."... Both sets, "Skrzat’s" and Edward’s ps. "Turkot", one took under the strong escort into the marketward. One drove there also of driven out from houses of men with this that drove their Ukrainians. They brought them to standing already under the wall of the arcades of the group in which were found already and yet reached, commander of the mounted reconnoitring detachment Mieczysław the count Ledóchowski ps. "Brzeszczot", 2 chief. of the company Zbigniew Wyrzykowski ps. "Maryśka", the commander of the 1 platoon Leon Szczerkowski ps. "Lew", The cecond-in-command of the 1. team Szymon Pałka ps. "Jawor", Roman Stokłosa ps. "Bodo", Szymon Sufczyński ps. "Tlok", with 1. of the team - Murowana Lipnica - and with WSOP Albin Rudnik ps. "Gazda" and yet six other stopped. After several hours of standing under the wall and to the check all, one gave dispositions the departure, in sum 15 of stopped persons.

"One forged us after two, then, pushing and poking, one loaded on mounted cars."... "Under the strong escort one transported us by Nowy Wiśnicz toward Bochnia."... "In the building where was situated Gestapo, one closed us in one cell."... "Of the morrow already from the morning began the interrogatory. One by one one called out arrested. Led out did not return more to the cell. When already they called out these all whom belonged to AK, day in day out was the calm."... "But already of the morrow, one led out me from the cell, not asking after the name."

"There began the hearing."... Bits and kicked stubbornly kept of her own version that calls Kwiecień that was only a rustic at home of Wieciech’s, dunno what is this the National Army. It had not time to answer on the question, and already got the following blow. At last drunk with the illicitly distilled liquor torturers with Gestapo got up from the table and ordered to lead out him. One led out him to the separate, empty cell. To the morning already he was not called in. In the morning was led out him on the yard, where stood already remaining, massacred, especially "Maryśka", "Lew", "Gazda" and "Turkot" , members AK. "All which did not belong to AK, and were together with us arrested, after the check of the identity remained free of charge. This fact confirmed our suppositions that this was the give-away and the treason of one from well informed members of our organization."

"Under the strong escort, handcuffed for two, one took us on the railway station."... Loaded to the rail-coach of the 2 class got to Cracow. Took their new escort which conducted them to the prison at the street Montelupich. There, after the incorporation, the wash, the shaving and the delousing of the clothing, one drove them to cells. "Skrzat" was found in one cell with "Gazda", "Maryśka" and "Brzeszczot". In principle nothing himself there did not occur. Only one day "Skrzat" became called out from the cell and along with other, strange prisoners transported to the abode Gestapo at Pomorska Street. "At loud “los, los" was placed us in one row. It came two civilians whom to every from us exactly looked on. They pointed on the older man and the boy with Dąbie whose at once they took."... After the hour of standing one took them back to the prison. "Skrzat" was conducted to his cell.

Came 7 day of December 1944. " ... already from alone the morning reigned the great"... "Loud calls one can hear was nearer and nearer of our cell, it is surely the evacuation of the all prison."... "From conversations on the corridor it resulted that id est the evacuation-the transportation to Mauthhausen or Gross-Rosen."... "At last the openly our cell. One called out in turn three my comrades and one locked out."... Shocked that remained alone, a loud call and the blows to door called the guard to whom it said that it is from the same group with these what their they took and wants to go along with them. The guard left, but after a little one called out also him. In the crowd of people he joined to his own. Then again he thought what made. "For good whether on bad, on the own wish I joined to comrades of the adversity." Whether well he turned out never will not find out. This was not same the error as the exit from the hiding-place in the barn?

Loaded on tight to capacity covered tarpaulins cars, became taken on the railway station where loaded to the last carriage of the military transportation. About the dusk ran in to the little ignition with the hardly visible inscription Gross-Rosen. By way of greeting, after the exit from carriages, ran up their  "...pack of wild beasts with whips in the hand and with dogs." Placed into cinque, moved in the side of the camp. After the short time they ran in to the gate of the camp over which was visible "...the perfidious inscription: "Arbeit macht frei"." "There returned just working commandoes outside the ground of the camp. In large columns emaciated went from the hunger and emaciated from the work, blackened from the wind, knocking with wooden huts for the pavement, more similar to corpses than to lively, figures." Newly come stood under a gate. At last after the evening - appeal, after the count, passed became by the gate and placed before a block of acceptances. It accompanied to this a dozen or so functional prisoners whom took with standing all parcels. The briefing lasted to the morning, when only after the breakfast, the morning - appeal and the exit of prisoners to the work one saw about newly with newcomers.

One ordered to undress to the skin and to fold the clothing two steps before himself. One assembled her to bags and  one took, possessed by some, valuables. Especially Germans were interested by possessory prisoners golden teeth. These one killed from the time. Remaining one hurried to the delousing station, where their everywhere one shaved and one surrendered the disinfection. After this only the registration followed the deal of tin plates with numbers. Naked and barefoot one hurried to the barrack wherein running, at with pleasure of given with the whip times, one took thrown clothing and boots. At last they received the first meal, too the unaccomplished supper, the breakfast and the dinner. This was the cold, watery soup from the turnip-rooted cabbage and the little bit of the bread.

At last, after the appeal, driven to the little, narrow room, after taking clothes off themselves to the skin, became some how arranged with a clothing and boots under a head. What was this first night in Gross-Rosen, testified massacred, dead bodies the lying morning in the lavatory.

Prisoners with Lipnica tried to hold together. Already in the first day became heavily beaten "Gazda", because incomprehensively of German did not execute the order. The same met "Turkot". "Every day, after the morning - appeal one read the certain quantity of numbers and these prisoners left the block." Nobody knew what himself with them farther the gun. In the day 14 or 15 of December became taken last group, and among them all, besides "Skrzat", prisoners with Lipnica. These were already last with them common moments. Also about their fate, besides "Brzeszczot", did not remain no message. "Brzeszczot" became free of charge probably from this camp, according to the information obtained from the nephew of "Brzeszczot" also Mieczysław and his elaborations of the biography of the rhodium Ledóchowski, thanks of the intervention Paul Lewetzow, the husband of the older sister of "Brzeszczot" of Józefina. So himself for "Skrzat" began the normal camp - day.

One day clearing the room, "Skrzat" risked to look to the barrack of the penal company, when noticed in her door the key. He saw two prisoners from whom of one recognized. This was the general Ignacy count Ledóchowski ps. "Krak" with Lipnica Murowana -, arrested, according to the information obtained from the nephew of "Brzeszczot", in first days of July 1944, and so many days before the action on the prison in Nowy Wiśnicz, while second, as later found out, Krzysztof prince Radziwił, with deeply, till for the bone with the crural, running wound. "When I closed already door, I heard the imploring whisper: "To eat"." The full fear, from standing close by of the kettle with the remainder of the soup, he filled their bowl. Several times succeeded to him this to repeat when was not none from caretakers next door to.

Bits and ill-treated, similarly as other prisoners, too the offence of any kind , "Skrzat” some how lived to see the morrow. All changed, when got née the letter, written in German, with Gothic on which also even-Stephen answerd. This fact , as well as the intervention of the chief of the Political Department at the sight of of beaten en route for the post, changed the relation functional to him. When after the short time received the pack née, treated functional with the sausage. It succeeded to him again to bring into contact with the prince to whom it gave some parcel delivered for him and with the general, giving to him a little of the bacon and of the onion. In spite the intervention and efforts, standing a chance of the success, for the dismissal of the general, to this it did not reach on account him, how describes the Mieczysław count Ledóchowski, veracities. During last, before the possible dismissal, interrogatories, he admitted to belongings to AK. This decided for his staying in the camp. In 9 day of March 1945,  during the evacuation of the camp to Dora the circle Nordhausen, the general died. After several days block- transferred "Skrzat" to himself and placed in her own little room. His lot became a little better, but with different hesitations.

From outside got up more and more more often news about successes of Russian armies. More often already it arrived at more sincere conversations between prisoners. One waited freedoms. Among members of the SS is visible was the more and more greater nervousness. One can hear already was even  the rumble of the artillery. To the camp came the new group of prisoners from Auschwitz. For every peccadilloes members of the SS shot without notice. Bodies from the time one referred to the crematory.

"There came 8 of February 1945. After the morning - appeal, when already working parties went out to the work besides the camp, one drove out us all from hutment on the parade ground. Easterly more and more more clearly one can hear was the rumble of the artillery"... "From standing with fives of prisoners, members of the SS chose only healthy and strong."... Of loaded to covered with tarpaulins of cars, standing behind the gate, one took away in the unknown direction. On the premises one unloaded them and one ordered to ditch them anti-tank. After the end, after several hours, the work and to the provisions, one loaded them on cars and one took on some railway station. Among shouting, beatings, barks of dogs and of shots one loaded them and long columns other, waiting already prisoners, to open goods-waggons, to every for 50 to 60 of prisoners. Too leaving, among the rain and the wind, by train stayed bodies of shot. When some time later they entered into mountains, vehemently it cooled and began to fall the snow. "Thin striped costumes did not protect from the wind and cold. Ill and emaciated prisoners froze standing, creating the curtain from the wind for remaining"... After several days of the drive and dodgings after the same ground, decimated, to the destination station, as later proved Nordhausen, got from the carriage already only 35 of prisoners.

The camp Nordhausen-Stadt, ad quem one conducted remaining prisoners, was a transit camp, with prepared for newcomers of here new prisoners. In empty halls to which their one let in was nothing. "... nor of beds, nor of cranes with the water, nor of troughs washable"... "Several metres behind halls dug it was the deep ditch, there one should have to relieve nature"... After two nights spent on the dirty and cold concrete, from brought boards one assembled three-level beds supplemented with straw mattresses with the straw and blankets. There they spent about two to three weeks to the time of raiding of the city. In the morning was assembled remaining still at the life of prisoners and after the release of the breakfast followed the march out

"After a dozen or so hours of the quiet march we reached to one from many (ausskommands) squads of the camp Nordhausen-Harzungen. Here reigned the normal, camp - order, as in Gross-Rosen." ... Prisoners were driven to different works outside the camp.

There came 1 day of April 1945, the first day of Easter - Holidays. After the morning - appeal and the release of the breakfast one gave dispositions again the appeal. One drove out from all hutment , even ill. After the formation of the column one took them on the railway station. During the download to closed carriages happened Dantean scenes. To one carriage one forced for 100 to 120 of prisoners. By several days one did not give to closed carriages nor waters, nor foods. Increasingly of prisoners fell dead from the hunger and exhaustion exhaustions. The little "Skrzat" pressed into the angle of the carriage, by first four days satisfied the hunger with the soup, with the bread and with the sugar which one received before the exit on the railway station, but when this ended, the hunger and the thirst began to tease. "I began to faint."... There persecuted him phantoms. In the eighth day of the travel the train stopped, openly carriages and one ordered to go out from carriages. With their carriage it shuffled out only just about ten prisoners. These which are fallen on tracks and did not rise, one drew on the heap of corpses and still of being dying out. These heaps later one burnt, to efface all traces. "Skrzat" with the remainder of powers got up and joined to the column.

The column moved. The every moment one can hear was shots to these whom fell or could not keep on. How long she lasted this way not it is known. They reached at last to the camp in Bergen-Belsen. Of full hopes that will get at last something to the eating, one conducted on enclosed square on which stood two wooden hutment without windows and door. About the entry to them was not there the speech, because were already filled to the maximum. Completely exhausted are fallen on the square. Only in the evening  "... one enqueued these, what else they gave the advice to rise and one gave first after so many days the food - one bread on twelve." ... Was this last what food received. At night still they lay side by side on the square in the environment every now and again of more new corpses, rats and of flies. In the morning fellow-prisoners threw it to dug holes. Hungry and more and more emaciated ate all that could conquer. Thrown by the enclosure the turnip-rooted cabbage, plucked out grass, whether recent and decaying letters or doughnuts of shrubs, and sometimes smuggled by wires remainders of the food

"The front very slowly, but systematically approached to the camp. From several days the earth trembled from powerful explosions, numerous flights of heavy planes, already without the protection, they flew by on the not big height." ... "One spoke that they have to ravage us with the fire from throwers. Completely left me powers. I could not already get up without somebody's help, I picked up only the head and on aching elbows the part of the trunk.

At last "15 of April in afternoon hours came the freedom."... "On the road close by of the camp went tanks, armour-plated cars , ithe guns." ,,, "Only after some time" on the ground of the camp "entered the car, whence the British officer , informed by loud-speakers in seven languages (in this with Polish) that we are free." On the order of Tommy Atkinses, several members of the SS from the service of the camp, it transferred bodies dead and lively yet, lying prisoners so, so that come into being the free belt of the ground to which one can that to pass and to run over. One brought and one threw about right and left biscuits, juices in cardboard - wrappings and tablets. From other car, with the sprayer, one strewed all with the disinfecting - powder DDT.

Demonstrative some of the trace of the life one transferred to the barrack, where hasty one prepared the hospital. "One took round vitamins, biscuits and drinks, appeared doctors." ... To "Skrzat"almost to unaware of this what himself with him happen, one gave still 10 of minutes of the life. Some by force they twigged and with the superhuman wish of the life it did not surrender of the death. How it knows from the story, when neighbours were certain that no longer lives,  "... call their attention my view and the sob. Probably about own powers I sat down on the bed of boards and looking round without no expression, and interests, spasmodically I sobbed." ... One took him from the barrack and then one transported to the hospital in Celle. There some time later it recovered the consciousness where found him the end of the war. Isolated lay, solitarily, in the separate room. Very weakened, under the continuous care of doctors, still unaware nothing, arrived at himself. When at last, during the weigh, it answered on the question how is called, became transferred on the general room. "I weighed the then 36 kg" ...

Some time later, during the medical visit , to him and to several other reconvalescents one informed that will become sent on the further treatment to Sweden. "Several thinking from us about most quickly return home, had not the readiness to go and decided to escape by night from the hospital. Between them was found and I.

By night it escaped them four. They moved to Poland, to their own houses and families. After many passages and adventures, the stay in camps, to the service in Poland to the Army IN THE WEST, to the learning in the Polish grammar-school  in Goslar, "Skrzat" in 16 day of July 1946. I stood up on the Polish ground.

Tens years later, in August 2000 of the year, thanks to accidental circumstances, "Strzat" came together in Glasgow with one from his own liberators, with Britisher Ian Forsyth whose the tank as first reached to gates of the camp in Bergen-Belsen. It did not get on emotions, common photographs, presents and of remembrances of that April.

The return to the front page of the description.
